Field and Woody Plant Crew Leader
Job Duties:
Specialize in the care and transport of our B&B (balled and burlapped) and Woody Plants (potted shrubs/trees). Maintain plants, from the planting, harvesting, and unloading process to the sales and distribution process.
● Use skid loader dig field trees
● Set up irrigation systems
● Plant and prune field trees
● Perform general site maintenance and management, including irrigation issues, deer fence maintenance and keeping a clean and orderly appearance throughout the nursery, as well as maintain prairie trail and spraying weeds as directed
● Keep B&B and container plants stocked in the retail areas
● Unload semis with containerized product using skid loader and forklifts
● Fertilize and water all plant material
● Transport product with machines including often on a small tractor/golf cart
● Pull landscape, contractor, and garden center orders
● Load landscape trucks with B&B trees
● Take and maintain inventory
● Support other departments as needed for special projects such as greenhouse covering
● Collaborate with management for “best practices” in all aspects of plant production and maintenance
● Overwinter all B&B and containerized plants
● Assist with site management such as managing compost, burning wood waste, repairing greenhouses and other buildings, fixing irrigation, spraying weeds, etc.
● Assist with garden center and landscape deliveries when needed
● Prepare trees for the landscape department at least one day in advance of the job
● Assist with snow and ice removal operations in the Winter
● Work under the direction of the Field and Woody Manager
● Provide instructions to English and Spanish speaking crew members
Requirements:
High school diploma/GED or foreign equivalent and one year of experience as a nursery worker, nursery crew leader or related occupation in nursery operations.
*Specific Skills and Other Requirements:
Requires one year of experience operating forklift and skid loader; and caring for woody plants and trees. Requires a driver’s license or the ability to obtain a valid driver’s license from the state of Minnesota. Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and be physically capable of bending, twisting, being on your feet for long hours, and able to lift at least 50-75 lbs.
