Softscape - Getting Started
Landscaping is a long-term investment and Sargent’s wants you to love your outdoor spaces. Plants play a significant role in the feel and function of a landscape. Putting the right plants in the right places is critical in getting the most out of your space. Whether your project is large or small, here are some things to consider as you begin planning your landscape project.
Planting Considerations
You may want different areas of your home to serve different functions. Your front foundation is a great place to make a statement and increase curb appeal. Whereas you may want to increase the functionality and privacy of your backyard for entertaining guests. Each area of your yard should receive different considerations depending on the amount of sun it receives, the amount of water it receives, wind direction, etc.
1) Check your surroundings – Is the plant being installed in front of a window? If so, you probably don’t want something that will get too tall and block natural light. Give plants, particularly trees and larger shrubs, room to grow.
2) Check your environment – It may sound obvious, but plants thrive when their needs are met. Some plants will do better in shady spots, while others perform better in sun. If plants get too much shade, they could have “leggy” growth and reduced blooms. Too much sun could burn leaves and give the plant a wilted appearance.
Sargent’s has created planting guides for Annuals, Perennials, Trees, and Shrubs to help in this decision-making process. You can also receive advice specific to you by visiting one of our Garden Centers.
Cost Considerations
A major factor for most homeowners is the cost of a project. Let’s consider that you’re “remodeling” the outside of your house. As with other remodeling projects, costs can vary greatly. Yet it’s important to keep in mind that landscaping is an investment in the value and enjoyment you get out of your outdoor spaces.
If the initial costs are over budget, consider doing the project in phases. Another option is to do some of the work yourself. For some small and medium sized projects, it may be appropriate to complete the project yourself. But many people choose to have the professionals at Sargent’s install their projects for them.
