Jason Resseman

Title: Sales Manager and Landscape Designer

Years with Sargent’s: 1

Years in the Landscape Design Field: 35

Education: University of Minnesota – Waseca

What inspired you to pursue a career in landscape design?

“I attended high school in Northfield, MN, where I participated in FFA. My instructor, who also ran a summer landscape business, taught landscape design as part of the school’s agriculture programs. This teacher served as a role model and inspired me to pursue a career in landscape design, for which I am grateful.”

Share something unique about you that few people know?

“I had the privilege of being mayor of Lanesboro, MN for 6 years.”

Do you have a favorite plant, tree, or material to work with?

“I enjoy the incorporation of evergreens into my designs as they provide structure and color in the landscape when most other plants are dormant.”

Can you share a project you’re especially proud of/enjoyed doing and why?

“I had a client whose father was a landscape architect. Upon his passing, he left some money to his daughter. She had lived in the same home for decades and was uninspired by her backyard. She wanted to invest part of her inheritance to re-landscape her yard in memory of her father. This project was special to me because every time the client looked at her new landscape, she was reminded of her father.”

What challenges do you face as a landscape designer and how do you overcome them?

“The biggest challenge I face is avoiding complacency and designing the same thing repeatedly. I strive to find new and unique ways to address design challenges,

understanding that each client and how they use their yard is different.”

What's your favorite part about designing outdoor spaces?

“The greatest reward of being a landscape designer is witnessing the joy clients feel upon project completion. Additionally, the uniqueness of each project fosters continuous growth as a designer.”

What landscape trends do you love right now?

“I appreciate that clients now view their yards as extensions of their indoor spaces. The trend of incorporating outdoor kitchens and other hardscapes is wonderful.”

What advice would you share with someone looking to start a landscape project at their home?

“Understand that the evolution of a landscape takes time, as should the design process. Take the time to ask your designer questions and clearly explain your goals.”
