2nd St. Greenhouse Construction Update

Updated on April 20, 2023

They say that only two things in life are certain: death and taxes. At Sargent’s, we believe that there is another certainty in life – change. Change is often a scary word. It’s human nature to resist change. We have evolved to seek out safe, stable environments and hold on to those as long as we can. The irony is that change is inevitable. Being plant people, we’re used to seeing change in nature. It is synonymous with growth. Trees send out branches that reach and expand towards the sun. Riverbeds warp and wane as floodwaters shape their banks. Nature has this incredible ability to adapt and evolve over time. As a 50-year company, we too have seen our fair share of change. And although it is often scary and uncomfortable, it’s how we’ve been able to serve our community all this time.

The Rise of Houseplants

Today we’d like to take a moment and showcase the next evolution of Sargent’s. Houseplants are a segment of this hobby that has skyrocketed in recent years. Houseplants give us an outlet for our passion year-round. They allow us to invite our gardens into our homes. They fill us with a sense of warmth and vibrance during our long cold winters. We wanted to create a space where all of these benefits can be celebrated. And not just a retail space, but a place where customers can come BE. That’s why we are very excited to announce our greenhouse expansion.

Expanded Greenhouse

Sargent’s on 2nd is tripling the retail greenhouse space. Preconstruction began late last fall with grade changes and retaining wall work. Since early March, a greenhouse crew has been working on dropping in new walls to the Canopy that was to the north of the existing greenhouse.  The work is slated to be completed mid-April, at which point we will be able to offer more houseplants, tropicals, and early season products than ever before.

More Than a Greenhouse

Beyond offering more products, we want to create an environment that invites our customers to do more than shop. We want to create a space for you to engage with the warm, creative atmosphere of a greenhouse. The new greenhouse will remain heated year-round, giving us more opportunities for events and workshops. During the winter months, we will incorporate seating for you to enjoy your cup of coffee (read more about Café Aquí here) and take in the warm sunshine.  Our goal is to create a space that our plant community can interact with, rather than just shop in.

Join Us!

As hard as change can be, we are very excited to continue to serve the plant people of SE Minnesota. Although this new space is an exciting new chapter in Sargent’s history, we also acknowledge it’s the people who fill a space that makes it special. Join us!
