Courtyard Transformation: A Modern Zen Retreat

Originally completed and landscaped in 2024, this home featured a central courtyard that, while functional, didn’t quite capture the tranquil ambiance the homeowners envisioned. Earlier this year, the client reached out to Sargent’s with a clear request: the space needed more “Zen.” Given its visibility from much of the interior, they wanted a courtyard that was not only peaceful but visually compelling.

Working on a newly constructed residence with a dedicated courtyard is an increasingly rare opportunity, so Sargent’s designer Jason Resseman was thrilled to take on the project. With that in mind, Jason set out to create a design that was both site-specific and deeply personal to the client.

Our client had a few key goals for the transformation:

  • Bring a sense of calm and simplicity to the courtyard.

  • Complement the home’s modern architecture with a clean, intentional design.

  • Incorporate artistic, low-maintenance plantings with year-round interest.

  • Use unique materials to add visual impact and define the space.

Features and Materials

To achieve the client’s goals, we used a mix of structure, texture, and innovation. A standout feature is the use of oversized concrete spheres, typically found as commercial bollards, which serve as sculptural, modern focal points. The largest sphere, weighing 3,000 pounds, was a major installation challenge and a defining moment of the project.

To soften the space and add warmth, Jason designed a multilevel cedar deck that created a cozy seating area with a fire feature. The natural wood tones contrast beautifully with the concrete and gravel, eliminating the need for extensive plantings while anchoring the entire courtyard.

Fine Details and Challenges Overcome

Drawing inspiration from traditional Japanese tea gardens, Jason reimagined the concept through a modern lens. Plants were arranged in clean, linear groupings to echo the home’s architectural lines. The selected plant palette was chosen for its ability to grow together harmoniously, offering low-maintenance care and dynamic seasonal color.

The biggest challenge was integrating bold, contemporary elements into a compact space without overwhelming it. The visibility from inside the home added pressure to ensure every detail felt intentional. Transporting and installing the 3,000-pound concrete sphere required extensive planning and collaboration—but the result was well worth it.

Bringing the Client’s Vision to Life

From the beginning, the goal was clear: transform a functional courtyard into a peaceful retreat that felt like an extension of the interior. By blending minimalist plantings, natural materials, and sculptural accents, the finished space strikes a perfect balance of calm and creativity.

This project showcases how thoughtful design and unexpected materials can redefine even the most understated areas. The courtyard now serves as a daily source of tranquility, offering the homeowners a beautiful and meaningful place to unwind.
