Describe your day-to-day at Sargent's:

“As the annual plant supervisor, I cover a wide area of our retail store at Sargent’s on 2nd. My days typically start with checking in with our team of staff and preparing our space for customers. I spend a lot of time watering and deadheading plants and also connecting with our customers and answering any questions they have about our selection or their gardens at home. I also have some off-site jobs where I go to local businesses and water annual plantings or care for their houseplants. It makes for a great variety to the work week!”

How did you get involved in the horticulture industry?

“In high school, I had a class segment on our food system, and I became fascinated by how our food is grown and how sustainability can be improved. My principal encouraged me to look into a horticulture degree, which I pursued. Once a full-time role became available at Sargent’s on 2nd, I jumped at the opportunity to use my degree and work with plants every day.”

What do you enjoy most about your job at Sargent's?

“I love container designing, such as annual plantings. With so many plants to choose from, the design options are endless. I also really enjoy the education element of my role. From answering questions in the store, sharing some plant knowledge in an info video, to teaching classes at Sargent’s or guest speaking at an event, I enjoy helping others succeed in their plant endeavors.”

What's your favorite plant at home?

“My favorite outdoor plant is Queen of the Prairie (Filipendula rubra). It’s a tall perennial with pink plumes (almost resembling astilbe). We sell it at Sargent’s now!

My favorite houseplant has to be my Monstera Albo. It was on my wishlist for quite some time. It has beautiful variegation and is a rare plant.”

As a professional, do you have any tips to share about gardening?

“Researching your plants’ needs will help you find success. Each plant variety has different care requirements, so working with your plant will help it thrive! You really can’t go wrong when experimenting in the garden. It’s a process that takes learning, trial, and error, especially when growing a new plant.”

Outside of your work at Sargent's, what do you enjoy spending your time on?

“I create stained glass, and enjoy hanging with my dogs, reading, and gardening too!”

What is something unique about you that few people know?

“My co-workers know this already… but I love a Strawberry Matcha from Café Aquí!”
