On April 9th 2026, our team at Sargent’s partnered with the Oronoco Fire Department to perform a controlled burn on our 3-acre prairie. While it may seem counterintuitive, fire is actually one of the most important tools for maintaining a healthy, thriving prairie ecosystem.
Controlled burns, also known as prescribed fires, are carefully planned and executed under specific weather conditions to ensure safety and effectiveness. These burns help remove built-up plant debris, return valuable nutrients to the soil, and encourage strong new growth.
For native prairie plants, fire is a natural part of their lifecycle. Many species have deep root systems that allow them to quickly bounce back after a burn, often growing back stronger and more vibrant. At the same time, controlled burns help manage invasive species that can outcompete native plants if left unchecked.
Beyond plant health, prescribed burns also improve wildlife habitat, creating space and diversity for pollinators and other beneficial species.
Safety is always the top priority, which is why working alongside trained professionals like the Oronoco Fire Department is essential. Their expertise ensures the burn is conducted under the right conditions and remains fully controlled from start to finish.
This controlled burn was used as a training day for Oronoco firemen. We had 12 department members on site, including two fire chiefs and two of our very own Sargent’s team members who serve on the department, Caleb and Nick Timmerman.
As part of our partnership, Sargent’s will be making a donation to the Oronoco Fire Department’s equipment fund so that they can enhance their gear set-up, including new gas masks and personal protective equipment.
We’re excited to watch the prairie come back to life in the coming weeks and are grateful for the hard work of our local fire department as we continue to restore our native land!
