With so many beautiful colors, varieties, and textures, plant shopping can be a bit overwhelming. Start your annual shopping with a plan so you can be confident about your selections and have beautiful planters all year long.
Thrillers
Thrillers are plants with height that add drama and a vertical element to the combination. They can be flowering plants, foliage plants, or ornamental grasses.
Thrillers are generally put either in the center or at the back of the container, depending on the placement of the planter.
Fillers
Fillers tend to be more rounded or mounded plants and make the container look full, placed in front of or around the Thriller.
If the Thriller is in the center of the container, the Fillers should surround the Thriller variety.
Spillers
Spillers are trailing plants that hang over the edge of the planter.
Spillers and fillers can be similar plants depending on the planter style. Spillers are designed to connect the elements of the planter and pull everything together.
Plant Care Needs
While you’re choosing your thrillers, fillers, and spillers, be sure that they have similar care needs, such as light and water. For example, a planter in full sun should have plants that all desire full sun. While you can mix and match, for the greatest success and ease, stick with plants that have the same needs.
Color Coordination
When choosing your color scheme, using complementary colors will elevate your design. If you’re using two colors, try going with colors opposite of eachother on the color wheel. If you’re using three colors, find colors that are opposite in a triangle shape (i.e. blue, red, and yellow).
For a simple color scheme, choose three colors next to each other on the color wheel.
Keeping it Simple
There truly aren’t any rules when selecting colors and textures. The options are endless when it comes to planters!
