Title: Landscape Crew Leader

Year Started at Sargent’s: 2019

How did you get involved in the landscape industry?

“Growing up, I’ve always had an interest in landscaping. I had a lot of exposure to it as a kid and knew I’d enjoy the work it brought. I enjoy being outside and problem-solving, so landscaping has been a great fit.”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

“I love collaborating with the crew to get a job done. We’re all working toward the same goal of installing a beautiful design and bringing the client joy with our work. The landscape team is an awesome group of individuals, and I’ve become great friends with many of the guys, both in and out of work.”

Tell us about a recent project you worked on. What were the highlights and challenges of this design installation?

“A while back, Jeremy and I were tasked with creating a round Versalock wall. The trick about this Versalock stone is that it made a circle no smaller than 8 feet in diameter, and our client’s design required a 5-foot curve. I learned how to properly cut the stone in a way that fit the plans, and we completed the design successfully. It’s always fun to work on projects a bit out of the ordinary since it pushes us to figure out the tricks of specific materials and unique spaces.”

As a professional, do you have any tips to share about landscaping?

“My biggest tip is to avoid overcrowding a landscape. When plants are installed, they look small, and it may be tempting to place them close together. However, plants typically aren’t mature when placed in the ground, so it’s best to leave some space. They may look far apart, but trust the process! They’ll grow bigger each year, so sometimes less is more.”

What is something unique about you that few people know?

“I’m fluent in Spanish! I never planned to speak another language and didn’t even take a course in high school, but in 2021, I was placed on a crew with Edwin and decided to learn some Spanish so we could communicate better at work. I learned pretty quickly because I wanted to get to know him better as a person. Fast forward to now, I’ve become great friends with the Guatemalan crew and even visited the guys and their families during the past two winters.”
