This prominent home in Rochester’s historic Pill Hill neighborhood underwent a complete transformation after the homeowners finished remodeling the interior and turned their attention outdoors. While the house itself was beautiful, the outdoor space was in need of a Sargent’s transformation.
Our client had a few key goals for the transformation:
Create an extension of the home by adding outdoor living space.
Complement the home’s historic architecture with intentional design.
Add beauty and reduce maintenance of the hillside.

Features and Materials
The project featured Eden Stone limestone retaining walls, a historic material that complemented the home’s architecture and preserved the character of the property. New custom-cut blue stone steps and garden beds replaced the old hillside access, while a blue flagstone patio created an extension of the house and made more sense for outdoor living. The driveway was widened, and the upper walkway was accentuated to improve both function and appearance.
Fine Details and Challenges Overcome
The hillside was unmanageable, the old stairs leading up the hill were unsafe and unattractive, and runoff was a concern. Our Sargent’s Landscape Designer worked closely with the client to select materials that fit the historic character of the neighborhood while creating a landscape that was aesthetically pleasing from the house and helped manage water runoff.
To enhance privacy and create a backdrop for the new patio, we introduced new trees and large evergreen screening while removing an outdated vegetable garden and playset. Seasonal hydrangeas and other flowering plants provide beauty throughout the year, while furniture and annual plantings add additional color and interest.
Adding Value to Our Client's Life
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project was completing it in time for an important family event. We are proud of the wow statement it created for the family and the lasting impact it made on how they use and enjoy their outdoor space. The design also allows for future expansion, including the possibility of an outdoor kitchen or pergola, demonstrating our commitment to working with clients on both their current and future needs.

This project is a Sargent’s statement project that reflects the professionalism, attention to detail, and trust that set us apart. Beyond the visual transformation, it improved the client’s daily life by creating a space that is usable, enjoyable, and requires less maintenance. Throughout the three-week installation, which involved two Sargent crews with specialties on specific tasks being completed, we could see the amazement of the client as each day’s progression revealed the transformation.
