How did you get into horticulture, and what led you to specialize in houseplants?

“I have always had an interest and love for plants, having grown up with many indoor and outdoor gardening projects with my mom and family. I find horticulture a fascinating subject and have always sought out information and other knowledge from books and other people’s first hand experiences. I think the best environment is one with plants, so I have built up my own mini jungle and love to help others start their own and be successful.”

What’s your favorite part about working at Sargent’s?

“My favorite part about working at Sargent’s would have to be the daily interactions with my awesome coworkers, and also with the fun customers that share their excitement in finding their plants.”

What’s your favorite plant in (or out) of the greenhouse?

“That is a really tough question, but I would have to say any Hoya!”

What is one fool-proof houseplant for beginners, and one that you would only recommend for houseplant experts?

“I definitely would recommend a snake plant or a zz plant for beginners, and for experts, maybe a cissus discolor vine.”

As someone who works with plants every day, do you have any pro tips to share?

“Just to learn your plant’s requirements, and to know that most of the time we win, but sometimes even the best of us lose a plant or two.”

What is something unique about you that few people know?

“I have become a friend to all bugs, after learning a lot about them when my son was little and fascinated with them. This has led to me having a few unusual pets. When there’s an interesting (or scary) bug, I’ll often get a call over the radio to come ‘help’.”
